Named after a great bridge crossing the river with a single span built by great architect Mimar Hajrudin in 1565. Mostar is a wondrous old town divided to the Muslim quarter and with a strong Turkish influence where, countless winding backstreets and mosques etc. dominate the townscape, and a modern, Western, Croatian quarter is much more modern. Some magnificent buildings, such as the Gymnasium and City Baths, remains from Austro-Hungarian times, add to the grandeur. Next stop is a pilgrimage site of Međugorje, made famous by of six young people who claim to have seen visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1981. An important place of pilgrimage and encouragement for faith and spiritual life for millions of people and thousands prayer groups. Be wary, as August weekends tend to be crowded due to the religious holiday of Virgin Mary.
